OBJECTS THAT ARE HARD TO SCAN - AND HOW TO IMPROVE THE RESULTS

Some objects are harder to scan than others . We collected some info that is nice to know if you have trouble scanning certain objects and what you can do about it.

Scanning dark objects

Objects with dark parts usually have a poor reflection for the laser beam. Consequently the object structure in dark areas can be lost. Also it's hard for the scanner to differentiate the dark objects parts from the black tent provided.

Use powder or removable paint to change the color of the object before scanning. Beware that your scanning object is not destroyed - make a test before adding to the whole object.

Scanning shiny or reflective objects

Shiny or reflective objects can also be hard to scan. If coloring the object is not an option, you may be able to rescue the scan by coating your object with a fine layer of talcum or baby powder. Reflective surfaces will distort the output but the powder eliminates this problem.

Scanning translucent / transparent objects

Translucent objects will not be picked up by the scanner. You can try to do the same as with reflective objects and ad talcum or baby powder - or simply color the translucent parts if this is possible.

Scanning symmetrical objects

If your object is mostly symmetrical it's more difficult for the scanner to knit the scans together in the processing. It's easier when there are obvious features to align.

You can add something to the object so it is no longer symmetrical. Read this article for more info: How to scan symmetrical objects

Scanning small or large objects

If your object is too small or too large for the scanner you will also experience problems. Small objects will scan with limited resolution. Find the scannable dimensions here.

Best object surfaces to scan

  • Matte, not shiny
  • Opaque, not translucent/transparent
  • Asymmetrical, with abundant scan alignment features
  • Light in color, not black or dark
